The 42nd UID Conference will be held in September 2021 in the area of the Strait, between Messina and Reggio Calabria, organized by teachers belonging to the Universities of the two cities. In recent months, we have all experienced the importance of being able to communicate our ideas and the results of our research between distant places; to express our thoughts and our presence through the irreplaceable tool of the word, but also through devices and forms of expression that just a few years ago we would not even have been able to imagine, and we have done so with great ease. For over thirty years, our scientific community has been open to digital and to new technologies, considering them an inexhaustible source of expression and creativity, rather than devices for transmitting and processing data. The Distances\u00a0have prompted us to renew our interest in unknown or little-used\u00a0Technologies\u00a0and, consequently, to adopt\u00a0Languages\u00a0different from the well-established ones. Some have done so with enthusiasm, some with an understandable reluctance, but we must all recognize that this challenge has produced yet another flourishing of the discipline, focused on the contamination and interaction between different forms of knowledge. A new digital aesthetic that, once again, finds in\u00a0Drawing its privileged expressive form. Starting from these reflections, we have chosen the theme of the 42nd UID Conference: Drawing. Languages, Distances, Technologies. Three terms that for some months now have appeared to us in a different light, but which are not new to us at all. Drawing was considered a universal\u00a0language\u00a0well before Horace\u2019s famous\u00a0Ut pictura po\u00ebsis; even Simonides of Ceo, in the 6th century BC, stated that \u201cPainting is silent poetry, poetry is eloquent painting”. The ability of Drawing to bridge\u00a0distances\u00a0in time and space was admirably exemplified by Pliny the Elder in his famous story about the Corinthian potter Boutades (Naturalis Historia, Book XXXV, 151). Even\u00a0technology, which we often associate with modernity, is a term derived from the ancient concept of\u00a0t\u00e9chne; in the 8th century BC, Hesiod believed that it was a prerogative of the gods and that the gods themselves had given it to humanity to face their own weaknesses (Works and Days, 109). All technologies make use of instruments, which can be more or less sophisticated, but the primary of all instruments, well before the advent of digital, is our hand. In all arts and sciences, as well as in drawing. The choice of the theme of the 42nd Conference could not ignore the one chosen for 2020, Connecting, widely addressed in the essays included in the Proceedings published last September, but unfortunately not yet developed and discussed in the papers that animate a symposium and make it the ideal place for dialogue and the growth of a scientific community.
