With the proliferation of national and subnational governments, non-profit organizations, corporations, and institutions of higher education all pledging to become carbon-neutral, carbon-positive (or carbon-negative), or to achieve net-zero emissions, what role do these pledges serve in advancing mitigation solutions in the face of the climate crisis? Specifically, neutrality pledges have emerged as a salient component of corporate and individual sustainability and climate mitigation policies but often lack substantive details of how emissions reductions will be achieved and include heavy reliance on carbon offsets. We invite papers that explore the technical dimensions and social and political implications of the use of carbon neutrality \u2013 and carbon footprint calculation in general \u2013 as a framework for achieving a sustainable future. We encourage a specific focus on the navigation of individual vs. collective responsibility and on the lifecycle analyses and technical assumptions underpinning this approach. Papers selected for this Special Issue are subject to a rigorous peer review with the aim of rapid and wide dissemination of research results and applications.
